Your Hearing Assessment
Your hearing assessment starts with some simple questions to establish the nature of your hearing difficulties and discover your concerns, wishes and preferences. Then we perform a full examination of your outer ear using an otoscope.
Next, we carry out detailed test procedures to assess how far any damage to the entire auditory system has progressed within 5 key areas. We describe these as the 5 phases of communication decline, and they include:
Phase 1 – Sensitivity to sound
In order to hear a sound, it must be loud enough to be audible. Damage to the auditory system can mean that the level at which a sound becomes audible to you is higher than normal. We use standard Pure Tone Audiometry to assess any decline in sensitivity to sound.
Phase 2 – Speech discrimination in quiet
Even in ideal listening environments, some people struggle to understand speech. We use Free Field Word Recognition Tests, presented through a calibrated sound delivery system, to assess any decline in speech recognition.
Phase 3 – Speech discrimination in noise
Communication in a noisy environment is harder for everyone, but some people have more difficulty than others, and this is the most commonly reported and troublesome area of communication difficulty for most patients we see. We use the QuickSIN Speech in Noise test to measure at what level speech needs to be, relative to all other competing sounds, for a patient to follow a conversation. This assesses any decline is speech discrimination in noise.
Phase 4 – Annoyance from background noise
Everyone has a tolerance level for background noise: a level at which they find noise simply annoying. We use the Acceptable Noise Level test (ANL) to measure at what level an individual finds noise annoying relative to a conversation at a comfortable volume. This assesses any decline in acceptable noise levels and tells us your likely hood of being able to wear a hearing solution in noise.
Phase 5 – Rehabilitation to amplification
Hearing and communication is highly complex and involves many processes and high level brain functions. For some patients the damage to one or more of these processes can mean that they will get little to no benefit from amplification. We use Aided Free Field Word Recognition Tests to assess the potential for improvement through amplification.
We will explain what your options are, advise you on which tailored hearing solution and technologies you will need and just as importantly, which will not be needed
Using these different assessment tools, we can identify how far any damage to the auditory system has progressed, and the impact caused in each of the 5 phases of communication decline.
After we’ve carried out the assessment, we will give you a detailed (but easy to understand) explanation of the results, to ensure you’re fully aware of the nature of your hearing difficulties and how they are affecting you. Then we will explain what your options are, and advise you on which tailored hearing solution and technologies you will need and just as importantly, which will not be needed. The demonstration of the resulting ideal hearing solution will allow you to discover for yourself the difference a correctly prescribed hearing solution will make to your ability to communicate.
No other national hearing aid company offers all these tests as a standard part of their service, so you can be confident you’re getting the very best assessment available.
